Jewnovations is the first-ever global map of new Jewish initiatives. An online clearinghouse of new Jewish organizations, projects, and initiatives, it has three main goals:
• To enable innovators to learn about each other’s organizations in order to create partnerships, share resources, and exchange information;
• To give funders of Jewish innovation an easy to use interface for doing research on potential grantees and an understanding of what is happening in the sector as a whole; and
• To provide the Jewish nonprofit world with a repository for organizations that are doing innovative work, developing next-generation best practices and transforming how Jewish community is built in the 21st century.
Ultimate it aims to help facilitate increased investment, collaboration, and community-building throughout the sector.
Founded in August 2012 by Amir Give’on, Jewnovations joined the Jumpstart platform in May 2013, with support from a Jewish Peoplehood Innovation Grant from the NADAV Foundation. Jewnovations currently is administered by Jumpstart and developed by Rimona Consulting.
As Dr. Caryn Aviv observes in Haskalah 2.0 (2010), "Jewish innovation is often difficult to define. The impact of innovation can be extremely powerful, but at the same time it’s hard to predict or quantify. Debates about what constitutes or qualifies as 'innovation' sometimes provoke anxiety or lead to false dichotomies between what is innovative and what is 'established.' ...In the end, innovation is often simply defined by what it is decidedly not – the patterns and practices of the current Jewish communal "establishment." Many Jewish innovators have been influenced by or are products of Jewish federations, synagogues, Hillels, day schools, summer camps, and other mainstays of the Jewish communal world. Many, but not all, leaders of Jewish startups describe themselves and their work (sometimes defiantly) either as alternatives to these traditional organizations, or (less frequently, at least in public) in opposition to, or as an antidote to, these institutions. Others take a more explicitly cooperative approach to framing Jewish innovation, arguing that their ideas and organizations expand the range of options for participation Jewish life, often through strategic partnerships and collaborations with established Jewish institutions. Still others seek to provide opportunities to grow and nourish emerging leaders who hope to take on important future roles and responsibilities within the larger Jewish community."
Most importantly, the initiatives you'll find on the Jewnovations map are the ones you put there. Our success depends on people like you to put your innovations on the map.
More generally, though, consistent with the parameters established by Jumpstart, The Natan Fund, The Samuel Bronfman Foundation, Pears Foundation, and the ROI Community in their 2008 (United States) and 2010 surveys (North America, Europe), this site lists autonomous or independent non-commercial initiatives founded 10 years ago or more recently. By non-commercial we mean foundations, charities (nonprofits), and hybrid social enterprises for which social impact is of equal or greater importance than financial return.
To be considered “Jewish,” the initiative should have some connection to Judaism, Jewish values, and/or Jewish life, specifically:
• Clearly motivated by and committed to Judaism, Jewish life, and/or Jewish values, OR
• Inspired or informed by them, but not an explicitly "Jewish" initiative, OR
• Not explicitly Jewish, but actively working in or with Jewish communities
Jewnovations is not a place to promote purely profit-driven ventures, nor initiatives that have no relationship to Jewishness whatsoever. If you’re not certain whether you should list your initiative, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Simply put, you! This map is a "wiki-map" which means that anyone can list any initiative. In the sign-up form, we ask for your connection to the initiative that you are posting, and we ask you to confirm that you are authorized to provide the information you post. However, we do ask that the information you provide be accurate, honest, and respectful of the diversity of Jewish experience.
You do. And you can delete your listing at any time. At Jumpstart, as at a growing number of platforms around the world, we believe that users retain the rights to information about themselves and should be able to delete any data that they upload onto Jewnovations. By uploading your information, you give Jumpstart permission to aggregate your information anonymously, along with others’ information, in order to create and share new knowledge about Jewish innovation, as Jumpstart has done with its 2008 (United States) and 2010 surveys (North America, Europe). As Jewnovations develops further, we’ll make sure you have the opportunity to opt-in to new ways of privately sharing your information with specific groups, for example, with current or prospective funders or applicants.
Absolutely, provided that you include an acknowledgment and a link back to our site. If you have any questions, please contact us at email@example.com.
We’d love to know your idea. This map is only a picture of the passion and creativity of people around the world just like you - its success depends on you. Please let us know your feedback and ideas by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
